Vehicle insurance in Venezuela

Updated

Almost everyone knows RCV liability insurance exists and almost nobody knows exactly what it covers. And because the Venezuelan fleet is old, the question of whether insuring a twenty-year-old car is worth it comes up constantly. This guide answers both, and sells you nothing.

What is RCV and is it mandatory?

RCV stands for vehicle civil liability: the coverage that responds for damage you cause to a third party, whether to their vehicle, their property or their person. It does not cover your car. It is the basic coverage and the one authorities require, which is why it is the most common and the cheapest. Being mandatory does not make it sufficient: it covers the other party, not you.

What does full coverage include?

Full coverage, known locally as casco, covers your own vehicle: total loss, theft, and depending on the policy partial collision damage as well. It is considerably more expensive than liability because the insured risk is the value of the car. Its cost is calculated on that value, so insuring an expensive vehicle costs more — which leads directly to the next question.

Is insuring an old car worth it?

It depends which coverage. Liability is worth it almost always, because what it covers is not your car but the damage you might cause someone else, and that damage is no cheaper because your vehicle is old. Full coverage is another conversation: once the annual premium approaches a meaningful fraction of the car value, many owners of two-decade-old vehicles keep liability only.

What should I ask before buying a policy?

Four concrete things: what value the vehicle is insured for and how that was determined, what exclusions the policy carries, what deductible you pay in a claim, and within what timeframe and under what conditions a claim is paid. That last one separates a cheap policy from a policy that works, and it is the one almost nobody asks before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Does liability insurance cover my car?

No. Liability responds for damage you cause to a third party. Covering your own vehicle requires full coverage.

Does Conduce sell insurance policies?

No. This guide is informational and does not sell insurance. To buy a policy you need an insurer or an authorized intermediary.

Can I insure an imported car?

Yes, once it is cleared through customs and registered. The insurer will normally require complete vehicle documentation.

Does insurance apply if I lend or rent out my car?

Many policies do not cover third-party use. That is exactly the point to confirm with the insurer beforehand, not after.
